Much like with any company, testing every variation of every make and model of every manufacturer would not be practical, nor the prediction of the upgrade path of each of those models and catering to that. Take, for example, the E9X chassis models… when you look on paper at the difference between a 328i, 330i and 335i (Standard 3 Series), mechanically they are the same in terms of control arm linkages, shocks, springs, and mounting fitment and horse power output is ~230, ~260, and ~300 HP respectively. From Ohlins’ perspective, clearly its not worth the R&D time to distinguish between these models in terms of valving and spring rates.

It is very common to see 335i cars with north of 400 HP to the wheels. The Öhlins Road and Track kits are fantastic out of the box, but when we start to modify our cars, sometimes the suspensions kits need to be tweaked to match.

As noted above, Öhlins cannot predict every car enthusiast’s upgrade path of every model of car from every manufacturer. This is why 3DM Motorsport is working with Öhlins to help fill the gaps in the BMW market such as special kits for the 335i.

Why Öhlins? Öhlins has been an integrated part of the Motorsport industry for over 40 years. With its headquarters in Sweden, there are over 320 employees and a test center at the most demanding track in the world, the Nurburgring. Ohlins is the choice of Professional racers from Touring Cars to 24 Hours of LeMans and more. Even the new 2018 BMW M4 GT4 factory racecar is equiped with Öhlins dampers.

Key Features:

  • Street friendly with racing level technology (DFV, Temperature Compensation, and more)

  • Adjustable (20+ available clicks of adjustment)

  • 2 Year Warranty (Corrosion tested ISO 9227)

  • Customizable (Spring Rates, Valving, Mounts, etc)

What Separates Öhlins from other dampers? Inverted strut design, temperature compensation valving, the unique Dual Flow Valve (DFV), diaphragm nitrogen valve, and more. For those who want to whet their appetite about the advanced technology behind Öhlins dampers, 3DM has put together an extensive guide explaining all the details. Click Here: Öhlins Technical Guide

Why Purchase Öhlins from 3DM Motorsport?

3DM Motorsport has been using Öhlins dampers on street and racecars for over 13 years. A suspension kit is not a commodity, but many dealers treat them as such and typically drop ship them straight from the manufacturer. At 3DM, we have a close relationship with Öhlins and we work directly with them on special projects such as the BMW line of ‘Dedicated Track’ kits. Our in house development, upgrade, and repair capabilities of Öhlins dampers helps us provide exceptional service to our customers.

Which Suspension Kit Is for me?

Everyone is a little bit different, or perhaps a lot different. Driving styles differ, mechanical skills differ, car upgrade paths differ, the list goes on. Before recommending a kit to someone these are some of the questions we ask…

  • What is your Personality?
Are you a “gearhead” and like to tinker with your suspension or do you like to leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is?

  • What is the Use Case?
How do you use your car… is it a daily driver, occasional “Sunday” driver, a dual duty street/track car, or a dedicated track car?

  • What level of NVH can you tolerate?
When discussing suspensions, you have probably heard the term NVH which stands for Noise, Vibration, and Harshness. For example stiff springs and damper valving can be harsh while spherical bearing mounts can create excessive noise. It is important to remember that other pieces of the suspension puzzle such as differential or subframe bushings can also affect NVH.

We suggest thinking through the answers to the above questions and then browsing our kit options below to see what best fits your needs. We are always an email or phone call away if you have any questions. Contact Us

335i Upgraded Rear Spring

335i Upgraded Rear Spring

(Basic Kit)

These are the basic kits out of the box and un-assembled. This is what you will find on most other eCommerce sites which are drop shipped straight from Öhlins.

These kits are designed to use the OEM mounts. Depending on your application, you may need special tools such as a spring compressor to dismantle your old suspension if you intend to reuse the original OEM mounts. Alternately, can purchase new mounts and the associated specialty hardware before assembly. You will need to be fairly mechanical savvy to install this kit, otherwise we recommend a professional shop perform the install and setup.

Assuming you use OEM mounts, these kits will have factory like NVH. The spring rates are increased so there will be some slight increase in harshness.

All Kits Include: Front dampers with perches, rear dampers, springs, rear spring ride height adjuster, adjuster tools, stickers, instruction manual.

Front Spring

  • Rate: (60 N/mm) (342 lbs/in)

  • Height (200 mm) (8 inches)

Rear Spring

  • Rate: (70 N/mm) ( 400 lbs/in)

  • Height: (230 mm) (9 inches)

(Upgrade Options)

Front Spring Options: (Ohlins Brand)

Because of the MacPherson strut front suspension, the lower spring perch is very close to the tire. Most wheel and tire packages clear the original spring from the basic kit but more aggressive fitments may rub such as a “square” setup. To help resolve this we offer two different 180 mm (7 inch) front springs to create additional clearance.

  • (60 N/mm) (342 lbs/in)

  • (70 N/mm (400 lbs/in)

Rear Spring Options: (Ohlins Brand)

Whether it be for track use or power upgrades, we have found increasing the rear spring rate helps improve the balance of these already fantastic kits. For example, the 335i is very popular in the aftermarket world because of the turbo charged N54/N55 motors. It is very common to see these cars exceed power levels of the M3. In addition, bigger wheel and tire packages are also a common upgrade which create a lot more grip. Because of this, we have found the rear spring rate of the standard BMS MI00 kit to be a little soft. We offer upgraded rear spring options for those who have tweaked their E90s. All springs have a 230 mm height

  • Rate: (110 N/mm) (628 lbs/in)

  • Rate: (120 N/mm)(695 lbs/in)

  • Rate: (140 N/mm) (800 lbs/in) Coming soon…

(Revalve Options)

The basic kit valving is fantastic out of the box, however if you prefer even more extreme performance, we offer revalve services for Ohlins. Each kit purchased from 3DM Motorsport comes with 1 free revalve. This is redeemable at anytime. Please see our “TrackDay” and “Dedicated” kits below for more info.

Öhlins Road and Track RTR Kits:

E9X 3 Series RTR

E9X 3 Series RTR

(Ready to Run)

3DM pre-assembles the basic Öhlins Road and Track Kits with OEM mounts so they are ready to bolt up to your car out of the box. This removes the need to research and source all the pieces yourself. It also reduces the risk of getting caught mid install with an incorrect part. New mounting hardware is also included depending on the application. All ride height settings are set to Öhlins recommended starting points with spring perch jam nuts torqued. You can always request a different setting or change it yourself before install.

In most cases, basic hand tools are all that are needed to install these kits. There should be no need for complicated special tools such as a spring compressor. Every DIY mechanic operates at a different pace but with these kits you will likely cut install time in less than half over a basic kit.

If you are having your favorite shop perform the install, the RTR kits will save you labor costs as well, offsetting the extra cost of the new mounts and hardware. We recommend letting your shop know this setup comes pre-assembled so they can adjust their labor estimate accordingly.

Much like the basic kits, the RTR kits will have factory like NVH. The spring rates are increased so there will be some slight increase in harshness.

All Kits Include:

  • Ohlins Road and Track kit: Basic or Upgrade versions

  • OEM Front Top Mounts

  • OEM Rear Lower Shock Mounts

  • Optional OEM or Urethane Upper Shock Mount

  • New Hardware

(M Performance)

It is a common practice to take a Non M BMW and upgrade suspension bits to the M version. Because the M front spindle and rear control arm differ, they require different fitment shocks. There are several ways to go about converting to M specifications.

Complete M3 Conversion Kit:
This requires a front M spindle, front M top mount, front M brakes and rear M control arm and associated hardware. Although not economical, this is the best scenario for performance.

Kit Includes:

  • M3 Front dampers

  • M3 Rear Dampers

  • Ohlins Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

  • Contact Us for spring options

M Rear Control Arm Conversion Kit:
Upgrading the front spindle can be expensive, especially if you already have a brake upgrade kit on your standard 3 series. Upgrading to the M rear arm is much easier and the lower shock mount of the M arm is much better than the standard 3 series. If you want to upgrade (or have already upgraded) to the M rear control arm, this requires a special kit that Ohlins does not offer directly. We have put together a kit that will work with this combination.

It is important to note that the M shock valving force curve has a different approach than the non M cars, it is not just to “match” the increased spring rate in the rear. In other words, the non M and M kits have the same front spring but different shock valving.

Our conversion kit includes the rear M3 shock PLUS we re-valve the front shock to the M3 valving specs to ensure a well balanced setup.

Kit Includes:

  • Front 335i damper revalved to M3 spec

  • Rear M3 damper

  • Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

  • Contact Us for spring options

M Valving and Spring Conversion Kit:
The most economical option is the standard non M kits with M valving and M springs rates. This makes the “M” conversion process much cheaper and much less of a labor hassle. This way you get the “M” performance without the “M” price.

Kit Includes:

  • Front 335i damper revalved to M3 spec

  • Rear 335i damper re-valved to M3 spec

  • Ohlins Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

  • Contact Us for spring options

3DM TrackDay Series Kits:

(Track Focused, Street Friendly)

Our ‘TrackDay Series’ kits take the Öhlins Road and Track dampers to the next level while still retaining street-ability.* While you certainly can “set it and forget it” with these kits, they are geared more towards the person who wants to tinker with their suspension on a regular basis.

These kits are not “shopping cart” developed. Tweaks to each component have been made to ensure proper fitment and the ultimate performance. The camber plates AND dampers have been modified to ensure proper bump/droop travel. Springs have been spec-ed to have sufficient compression travel and dampers and been re-valved for better performance on track.

All Kits Include:

  • Re-valved Dampers

  • Swift Race Springs

  • Camber plates

  • Optional rubber bushing or spherical bearing rear lower shock mounts

  • Optional urethane or spherical bearing rear upper shock mounts

  • Ohlins Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

Öhlins Dedicated Track Kits:

(Competitive, Not Complicated)

These kits have been designed for cars that see nothing but track use. They are similar in fitment to our TrackDay Series kits but with much higher spring rates and valving to match including a modified Dual Flow Valve setup. All mounts are spherical bearings.

All Kits Include:

  • Re-valved dampers

  • Race Springs

  • Camber plates

  • Spherical bearing rear lower shock mounts

  • Spherical bearing rear upper shock mounts

  • Ohlins Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

TTX 40 Eye to Eye Damper

TTX 40 Eye to Eye Damper

TTX 36 ILX Eye to Eye Damper

TTX 36 ILX Eye to Eye Damper

(The ultimate racing suspension)

These are for the serious racer looking for the extra edge. TTX is a twin tube damper that is fully pressure balanced eliminating the risk of cavitation, enabling the use of low gas pressure which keeps friction at bay. The low amount of hysteresis results in excellent short stroke/high force performance.

TTX 46 Strut Damper

The TTX 46 strut damper can be modified to fit a wide range of car types and models. Available in both 2 way and 4 way adjustable. Through rod technology removes gas pressure from the piston shaft reducing friction tremendously.

TTX 40 Eye to Eye Damper

The perfect complement to the TTX 46 strut damper, the TTX 40 damper can be modified to fit a wide range of car types and models. Available in both 2 way and 4 way adjustable. Through rod technology removes gas pressure from the piston shaft reducing friction tremendously.

TTX 36 ILX Eye to Eye Damper

A more economical compliment to the TTX 46 Strut damper. Available in both 2 way and 4 way adjustable but in a non through rod application. The inline reservoir creates a compact package as there is no need for an external reservoir.

Re-valve | Repair | upgrade Services

Already own an Öhlins Road and Track suspension kit? Whether you purchased it from 3DM Motorsport or not, we offer a a suite of services to suit your needs. Please Contact US for further information.

Rebuild services:
Its a good idea to have your dampers serviced on occasion. Just like oil in your engine, shock oil doesn’t last forever. There is no set interval like an engine oil change, It all depends on the abuse the dampers have gone through. A general rule of thumb is every 1 to 2 years of track use and approximately every 4 years of street use.

Re-valve Services:
Making a drastic setup change or not happy with the way your car is reacting dynamically? We can re-valve your dampers to help dial in that new setup. Each re-valve comes with a pre and post dyno sheet for record keeping purposes.

Upgrade Services:
‘Basic’ and ‘RTR’ kits can be upgraded to ‘3DM TrackDay Series’ kits or ‘Dedicated Track’ kits. We have all the appropriate hardware as well as valving spec cards to change over your kit and take it to the next level.
