3DM Motorsport is very familiar with the E9X 3 Series chassis. We have experience with an E90 328i in the former Grand Am Continental Tire Challenge ST class and an E92 335i in the One Lap of America. We are an Öhlins USA development partner and were involved with the development of the E9X Ohlins ‘Dedicated"‘ suspension kit. We have our own in house E90 335i development car and shock dyno which has helped us fine tune the kits you will find below.

Why Purchase Öhlins from 3DM Motorsport?

3DM Motorsport has been using Öhlins dampers on street and racecars for over 13 years. A suspension kit is not a commodity, but many dealers treat them as such and typically drop ship them straight from the manufacturer. At 3DM, we have a close relationship with Öhlins and we work directly with them on special projects such as the BMW line of ‘Dedicated Track’ kits. Our in house development, upgrade, and repair capabilities of Öhlins dampers helps us provide exceptional service to our customers.

Which Suspension Kit Is for me?

Everyone is a little bit different, or perhaps a lot different. Driving styles differ, mechanical skills differ, car upgrade paths differ, the list goes on. Before recommending a kit to someone these are some of the questions we ask…

  • What is your Personality?
Are you a “gearhead” and like to tinker with your suspension or do you like to leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is?

  • What is the Use Case?
How do you use your car… is it a daily driver, occasional “Sunday” driver, a dual duty street/track car, or a dedicated track car?

  • What level of NVH can you tolerate?
When discussing suspensions, you have probably heard the term NVH which stands for Noise, Vibration, and Harshness. For example stiff springs and damper valving can be harsh while spherical bearing mounts can create excessive noise. It is important to remember that other pieces of the suspension puzzle such as differential or subframe bushings can also affect NVH.

We suggest thinking through the answers to the above questions and then browsing our kit options below to see what best fits your needs. We are always an email or phone call away if you have any questions. Contact Us

(Basic Kit)

Ohlins Part Number: BMS Mi30
3DM Motorsport Part Number: 3DM-P-1001

These are the basic kits out of the box and un-assembled. This is what you will find on most other eCommerce sites which are drop shipped straight from Öhlins.

These kits are designed to use the OEM mounts. Depending on your application, you may need special tools such as a spring compressor to dismantle your old suspension if you intend to reuse the original OEM mounts. Alternately, can purchase new mounts and the associated specialty hardware before assembly. You will need to be fairly mechanical savvy to install this kit, otherwise we recommend a professional shop perform the install and setup.

Assuming you use OEM mounts, these kits will have factory like NVH. The spring rates are increased so there will be some slight increase in harshness.

Kit Includes:

  • Front struts with lower and upper spring perches

  • Rear dampers

  • Front spring: (Rate: 60 N/mm - 342 lbs/in) (Height: 200mm - 8 inches)

  • Rear spring: (Rate: 70 N/mm - 400 lbs/in)(Height: 230mm - 9 inches)

  • Rear height adjuster

  • Height adjuster wrenches

  • Mounting instructions

  • Ohlins sticker and plaque book

Special Notes: (3DM Motorsport Upgrade)
When a coil spring compresses it wants to twist. We include spring thrust sheets with this kit for both the front and rear springs at no additional cost. Please note this is an item that is added by 3DM Motorsport and is NOT included with the basic kit from Öhlins. For more information see our product description here: Spring Thrust Sheets

Öhlins Road and Track Basic Kit (3DM Upgrades):

e90_Standard_kit.jpg

(Basic Kit Upgrade Options)

Much like with any company, testing every variation of every make and model of every manufacturer would not be practical, nor the prediction of the upgrade path of each of those models and catering to that. The Öhlins Road and Track kits are fantastic out of the box, but when we start to modify our cars, sometimes the suspensions kits need to be tweaked to match. We have done a lot of testing with our very own 3DM Motorsport E90 335i both on the street and on the track. Since there are so many options, it is best to Contact Us and we can put together the best kit to suit your needs.

Front Spring Options:
Because of the MacPherson strut front suspension, the front strut lower spring perch is very close to the tire. Most wheel and tire packages clear the original spring from the basic kit but more aggressive fitments may rub such as a “square” setup. To help resolve this we offer two different 180 mm (7 inch) front springs which move the perch up to create additional wheel/tire clearance. These springs have been selected because they have the proper spring travel to allow the bump stop to engage before coil bind of the spring. Please note there are many different wheel and tire packages. Wheel spacers may still be needed to clear this spring setup.

  • (Rate: 60 N/mm -342 lbs/in) (Height: 180mm - 7 inch)

  • (Rate: 70 N/mm -400 lbs/in)(Height: 180mm - 7 inch)

Rear Spring Options:
We have found the rear spring rate of the standard BMS MI00 kit to be a little soft when we upgrade our E9Xs with power upgrades and/or bigger wheels and tires. For example, the 335i is very popular in the aftermarket world because of the turbo charged N54/N55 motors and it is very common to see these cars exceed power levels of the M3. We have found increasing the rear spring rate helps improve cornering balance and reduce squat under acceleration.

  • (Rate: 110 N/mm - 628 lbs/in) (Height: 230mm - 9 inches)

  • (Rate: 120 N/mm - 695 lbs/in) (Height: 230mm - 9 inches)

  • (Rate: 140 N/mm - 800 lbs/in) (height: 230mm - 9 inches)

Re-valve Options

The ‘basic kit’ valving is fantastic out of the box, however if your car is heavily modified (wheels/tires and more power) it is beneficial to have shock valving to match these upgrades. There is a lot of misinformation on social media regarding the BMS Mi00 kit valving. We have found that the front strut piston is unique to the BMS Mi00 kit so we have spent much time on our in house shock dyno finding the best setup for these dampers. Each kit purchased from 3DM Motorsport comes with 1 free re-valve and many of our customers opt to use this at the time of purchase to upgrade their BMS Mi00 kits. See our "‘M3 Conversion’ kits below.

(M Performance)

It is a common practice to take a non M BMW and upgrade suspension bits to the M version. Because the M front spindle and rear control arm differ, they require different fitment shocks. There are several ways to go about converting to M specifications. It is best to Contact Us to discuss the best option for your needs.

Standard 3 Series Shocks with M3 Valving and M3 Springs Kit: (our most popular M conversion kit)

This is the most economical way to replicate the performance of the M3 as it does not require upgrading to M3 spindles or rear control arms. We re-valve the basic kit BMS Mi00 to closely match the E9X M3 BMS Mi40 kit. There is a lot of misinformation on social media regarding the BMS Mi00 kit valving. The front strut piston of the BMS Mi00 kit is entirely different than the M3 front strut piston in the BMS Mi40 kit. Using our in house shock dyno, we have created our own proprietary valving that performs similar to the M3.

Kit includes:

  • BMS Mi00 front strut (re-valved similar to M3 specifications)

  • BMS Mi00 rear damper (re-valved to M3 specifications)

  • Front spring: (Rate: 60 N/mm - 342 lbs/in) (Height: 180mm - 7 inches)

  • Rear spring (Rate: 120 N/mm - 695 lbs/in) (Height: 230mm - 9 inches)

  • Rear height adjuster

  • Height adjuster wrenches

  • Mounting instructions

  • Öhlins sticker and plaque book

M3 Rear Control Arm Conversion Kit:

(Please note: Öhlins used to provide dampers individually but unfortunately this policy has changed. We are having to redesign this M conversion kit to accommodate this policy. These kits will be re-released soon. Please Contact Us for more information.)

Upgrading the front spindle can be expensive, especially if you already have a brake upgrade kit on your standard 3 series. Upgrading to the M rear arm is much easier and the lower shock mount of the M arm is a much better design than the standard 3 series. If you want to upgrade (or have already upgraded) to the M rear control arm, this requires a special kit that Öhlins does not offer directly. We have put together a kit that will work with this combination.

We take the same approach with this kit as we do with the ‘Standard 3 Series Shocks with M3 Valving and M3 Springs’ above except we use a rear damper that fits the E9X M3 rear control arm.

Kit Includes:

  • BMS Mi00 front strut (re-valved to M3 specifications)

  • Custom rear damper (valved to M3 specifications)

  • Front spring: (Rate: 60 N/mm - 342 lbs/in) (Height: 180mm - 7 inches)

  • Rear spring (Rate: 120 N/mm - 695 lbs/in) (Height: 230mm - 9 inches)

  • Rear height adjuster

  • Height adjuster wrenches

  • Ohlins sticker and plaque book

Complete M3 Conversion Kit:
This requires upgrading your standard 3 series to a front M3 spindle, front M3 top mount, front M3 brakes and rear M3 lower control arm and associated hardware. Although not economical, this is the best scenario for performance. If you choose to go this route we suggest looking at our E9X M3 Ohlins Buyers Guide.

Öhlins Road and Track RTR Kits:

E9X 3 Series RTR

E9X 3 Series RTR

(Ready to Run)

3DM pre-assembles all of our E9X 3 series kits with OEM mounts so they are ready to bolt up to your car out of the box. This removes the need to research and source all the pieces yourself. It also reduces the risk of getting caught mid install with an incorrect part. New mounting hardware is also included depending on the application. All ride height settings are set to Öhlins recommended starting points with spring perch jam nuts torqued. You can always request a different setting or change it yourself before install.

In most cases, basic hand tools are all that are needed to install these kits. There should be no need for complicated special tools such as a spring compressor. Every DIY mechanic operates at a different pace but with these kits you will likely cut install time in less than half over a basic kit.

If you are having your favorite shop perform the install, the RTR kits will save you labor costs as well, offsetting the extra cost of the new mounts and hardware. We recommend letting your shop know this setup comes pre-assembled so they can adjust their labor estimate accordingly.

Much like the basic kits, the RTR kits will have factory like NVH. The spring rates are increased so there will be some slight increase in harshness.

We offer these kits in various configurations:

  • Basic Kit RTR

  • Basic Kit with 3DM Upgrades RTR

  • Standard 3 Series Shocks with M3 Valving and M3 Springs Kit RTR

  • M3 Rear Control Arm Conversion Kit RTR

3DM TrackDay Series Kits:

e46 m3 track day.jpg

(Track Focused, Street Friendly)

Our ‘TrackDay Series’ kits take the Öhlins Road and Track dampers to the next level while still retaining street-ability.* While you certainly can “set it and forget it” with these kits, they are geared more towards the person who wants to tinker with their suspension on a regular basis.

These kits are not “shopping cart” developed. Tweaks to each component have been made to ensure proper fitment and the ultimate performance. The camber plates AND dampers have been modified to ensure proper bump/droop travel. Springs have been spec-ed to have sufficient compression travel and dampers and been re-valved for better performance on track.

All Kits Include:

  • Re-valved Dampers

  • Swift Race Springs

  • Camber plates

  • Optional rubber bushing or spherical bearing rear lower shock mounts

  • Optional urethane or spherical bearing rear upper shock mounts

  • Ohlins Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

Öhlins Dedicated Track Kits:

unnamed.jpg

(Competitive, Not Complicated)

These kits have been designed for cars that see nothing but track use. They are similar in fitment to our TrackDay Series kits but with much higher spring rates and valving to match including a modified Dual Flow Valve setup. All mounts are spherical bearings.

All Kits Include:

  • Re-valved dampers

  • Race Springs

  • Camber plates

  • Spherical bearing rear lower shock mounts

  • Spherical bearing rear upper shock mounts

  • Ohlins Rear Ride Height Adjuster and Spring Perches

(The ultimate racing suspension)

This kit has been developed and tested by 3DM Motorsport and is currently undergoing continued testing and fitment details. Please Contact Us for more information.

These are for the serious racer looking for the extra edge. The TTX damper is the culmination of three decades of Öhlins’ successful participation in world championship events winning more than 200 World Championships. Many years of working together with some of the world’s most successful racing teams together with advanced dynamic analysis methods developed at Öhlins Racing headquarter in Sweden has given Öhlins the unique knowledge needed to design the TTX damper. The Öhlins TTX damper, originally developed for formula racing, is designed to handle the demanding damping characteristics needed for all types of tracks, from street courses to super speedways. The TTX damper is fully adjustable with maximised damper response together with qualities you’ve never seen before when it comes to ”settings”.

For more information click on our Öhlins TTX Motorsport Damper Guide

TTX 46 Strut Damper

The TTX 46 strut damper can be modified to fit a wide range of car types and models. This kit comes as “2 way” adjustable where low speed compression and rebound are tunable. Through rod technology removes gas pressure from the piston shaft reducing friction tremendously.

TTX 36 ILX Eye to Eye Damper

A more economical compliment to the TTX 46 Strut damper. Available in both 2 way and 4 way adjustable but in a non through rod application. The inline reservoir creates a compact package as there is no need for an external reservoir.

Please give us a call to discuss your needs. Contact Us

Kit Upgrade Options:

  • TTX 46 Strut 4 way upgrade. This allows for both high and low speed compression and rebound adjustability.

  • TTX 46 Strut blow off valve. The through rod technology, low gas pressure, and low friction already make curb hopping with the TTX 46 strut fantastic. With the blow off valve you can carry even more speed over the curbs without losing grip.

  • TTX 36 ILX 4 way upgrade. This allows for both high and low speed compression and rebound adjustability.

  • TTX 40 Eye to Eye Damper. The perfect complement to the TTX 46 strut damper. Available in both 2 way and 4 way adjustable. These dampers have through rod technology like the TTX 46 struts. This removes gas pressure from the piston shaft reducing friction tremendously.

Re-valve | Repair | upgrade Services

Already own an Öhlins Road and Track suspension kit? Whether you purchased it from 3DM Motorsport or not, we offer a a suite of services to suit your needs. Please Contact US for further information.

Rebuild services:
Its a good idea to have your dampers serviced on occasion. Just like oil in your engine, shock oil doesn’t last forever. There is no set interval like an engine oil change, It all depends on the abuse the dampers have gone through. A general rule of thumb is every 1 to 2 years of track use and approximately every 4 years of street use.

Re-valve Services:
Making a drastic setup change or not happy with the way your car is reacting dynamically? We can re-valve your dampers to help dial in that new setup. Each re-valve comes with a pre and post dyno sheet for record keeping purposes.

Upgrade Services:
‘Basic’ and ‘RTR’ kits can be upgraded to ‘3DM TrackDay Series’ kits or ‘Dedicated Track’ kits. We have all the appropriate hardware as well as valving spec cards to change over your kit and take it to the next level.
